Thankfully, our beloved Up House appeals to the senses with its storybook charm, not its olfactory assaults. “His House” dives into the harrowing journey of a refugee couple, and it unfolds in a dilapidated housing estate in England. Gloomy and atmospheric, it’s a far throw from those animated heights. Talk about sticker shock — the Utah “Up” house’s price tag was as plump as a Thanksgiving turkey when it was sold! Though not officially disclosed, it’s rumored to have fetched a pretty penny, much more than your average abode.

Snow White Cottages

The real-life tale behind the Seattle “Up” house is that it’s a feisty defiance of change. Owned by Edith Macefield, who refused millions to sell out, it became a symbol of stickin’ to your guns, come hell or high water. The NETGEAR Wi-Fi Range Extender EX is a powerful connectivity solution designed to eliminate dead zones and broaden your wireless network’s coverage area. Providing an additional reach of up to 1500 square feet, it ensures that your Wi-Fi signal robustly extends to every corner of your home or office.

Born in Oregon in 1921, Edith lied about her age in order to join the service and support the war effort in England. Even when others discovered that she wasn't 18, Edith stayed overseas to care for orphans until her mother became ill and she returned to the States. If you plan on showing up with a photographer, in costume, or carrying your own balloons, or for any large occasion or event, you need to get a reservation. The homeowners are great at allowing people to take photos in front of their home, so remember to follow the rules so you don’t ruin it for everyone.

Its powerful motor delivers 60 times the power of manual scrubbing, allowing you to blast through soap scum, grime, and dirt with ease and efficiency. Some dreams invite steep climbs, and transforming the ‘Up’ house into a sky-traveling artifact was no walk in the park. Engineers and dreamers alike buckled down to dissect the nitty-gritty of such a whimsical endeavor.

Let us dwell, then, on the legacy of this real-life fairytale — a legacy that touches the skies but remains, forevermore, sarabande in the collective soul of its spellbound audience. This is the manifestation of our wildest fancies, a bold statement that indeed, life can be just as magical as the movies. From its stationary splendor in Utah, the real-life ‘Up’ house had stints across the globe, bringing delight and wonder to each location. The reactions were akin to witnessing a shooting star at noon — rare, surreal, breathtaking. It was not just looking up; it was gazing upon a dream solidified.

It was part of the Salt Lake City Parade of Homes tour, and I asked if any of you would be willing to go and snap some photos of it. The first annual Macefield Music Festival was held in 2013, dedicated to preserving Edith's fiercely independent spirit. A local tattoo artist created a design in honor of Edith and her house and the importance of "holding on to things that are important to you." If you want to stay longer, have a photoshoot, or go inside the house, you can arrange to do that directly with the owners.

Will Rogers State Park

If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so. This adorable home stands out on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. The rumor is that this house was owned by Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. You can park in one of the beach parking lots and walk down to the home or park by one of the neighbors. PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. Muntz captures Russell, but Carl and Dug board the dirigible and free both him and Kevin.

Carl and the others retreat back to the airship just as his tether breaks away. Muntz leaps after them, but snags his leg in balloon strings and falls to his death. Believing that basic visual cues convey much about personality, the filmmakers boiled the characters down to their physical essence. Carl was shaped as a brick, weighed down and resistant to change.

Well, hold onto your balloons – that house isn’t pinned to any real-world map! It’s pure Pixar magic, born from the studio’s boundless imagination. Though not a real place, fans have drawn parallels to similar-looking homes scattered around the globe, especially the famous “Up house” replica in Herriman, Utah. As a thoughtful and fun gift, the LEGO Disney and Pixar Up House is guaranteed to spark joy and inspire creative play for Disney fans and movie buffs.

The book is a treasure for any child’s library, promising to be a story that is revisited time and time again, offering the same joys and wonders as the timeless film that inspired it. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house.

I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out. You cannot go beyond the gate but it is truly spectacular to see. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available.

Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence.

Nah, “Up” ain’t got nothing to do with Utah except for that charming replica house. The flick’s more of a no-passport-required globe-trotter, taking us from the urban to the exotic in a hot air balloon’s heartbeat. The plucky kid from “Up,” Russell, isn’t modeled after one specific person. He’s a Pixar original, a melting pot of youthful energy, wide-eyed enthusiasm, and every ‘wilderness explorer’ who’s ever dreamt of adventure. Traversing from the whimsical realms of animation into the solid fabric of our reality, the Up house exemplifies the profound impact stories can have on us. Burrowed snugly within the narrative of Pixar’s ‘Up’, the house serves as a cornerstone to the film’s plot.

Workplace financial education and change in financial knowledge: A quasi-experimental approach Horwitz et al , 2021

what is quasi experimental research design

Overall, the purpose of quasi-experimental design is to provide a rigorous method for evaluating the impact of interventions, policies, and programs while controlling for potential confounding factors that may affect the outcome. Quasi-experimental design is a research method that seeks to evaluate the causal relationships between variables, but without the full control over the independent variable(s) that is available in a true experimental design. Some advantages of quasi-experimental studies are that, when compared to true experiments, they are less expensive and have higher external validity. By leveraging innovative designs like regression discontinuity and natural experiments, researchers can navigate the complexities of real-world scenarios while generating meaningful insights.

Part 3: study design features and their role in disambiguating study design labels

what is quasi experimental research design

Regression to the mean can be a problem when participants are selected for further study because of their extreme scores. A closely related concept—and an extremely important one in psychological research—is spontaneous remission. In reviewing the results of several studies of treatments for depression, researchers Michael Posternak and Ivan Miller found that participants in waitlist control conditions improved an average of 10 to 15% before they received any treatment at all (Posternak & Miller, 2001).

Qualitative Research Methods

The intervention is implemented and pharmacy costs before and after the intervention are measured. The strengths of pre-post designs are mainly based in their simplicity, such as data collection is usually only at a few points (although sometimes more). However, pre-post designs can be affected by several of the threats to internal validity of QEDs presented here. Table 1 summarizes the main QEDs that have been used for prospective evaluation of health intervention in real-world settings; pre-post designs with a non-equivalent control group, interrupted time series and stepped wedge designs.

External validity

Some common types of quasi-experimental designs are regression discontinuity, nonequivalent groups design, and natural experiments. These examples demonstrate how quasi-experimental designs can be applied in real-world settings to assess the impact of interventions or changes, despite the absence of randomization. Researchers assess participants’ weight and fitness levels before and after the program implementation. While participants weren’t randomly assigned, the program’s impact on health outcomes can still be evaluated. The primary intention of the checklist is to help review authors to set eligibility criteria for studies to include in a review that relate directly to the intrinsic strength of the studies in inferring causality. The checklist should also illuminate the debate between researchers in different fields about the strength of studies with different features—a debate which has to date been somewhat obscured by the use of different terminology by researchers working in different fields of investigation.

"Quasi-experimental research is similar to experimental research in that there is manipulation of an independent variable. It differs from experimental research because either there is no control group, no random selection, no random assignment, and/or no active manipulation." Quasi-experimental designs are used when researchers don’t want to use randomization when evaluating their intervention. This type of quasi-experimental research design calculates the impact of a specific treatment or intervention. The study used a non-randomized selection process to determine which city would participate in the research.

In the absence of common trends across groups, it is not possible to attribute the growth in the outcome to the program using the DID analysis. The problem is that we rarely have multiple period baseline data to compare variation between groups in outcomes over time before implementation, so the assumption is not usually verifiable. In such cases, placebo tests on outcomes which are related to possible confounders, but not the program of interest, can be investigated (see also above). Where multiple period baseline data are available, it may be possible to test for common trends directly and, where common trends in outcome levels are not supported, undertake a “difference-in-difference-in-differences” (DDDs) analysis.

Research Methods in Psychology

Students in a similar school are given the pretest, not exposed to an antidrug program, and finally are given a posttest. Again, if students in the treatment condition become more negative toward drugs, this change in attitude could be an effect of the treatment, but it could also be a matter of history or maturation. If it really is an effect of the treatment, then students in the treatment condition should become more negative than students in the control condition. But if it is a matter of history (e.g., news of a celebrity drug overdose) or maturation (e.g., improved reasoning), then students in the two conditions would be likely to show similar amounts of change.

Let’s explore a few examples of quasi-experimental designs to understand their application in different contexts. It is often difficult to assure the external validity of the experiment, due to the frequently nonrandom selection processes and the artificial nature of the experimental context. This page includes an explanation of the types, key components, validity, ethics, and advantages and disadvantages of experimental design. Experts were able to investigate the program’s impact by utilizing enrolled people as a treatment group and those who were qualified but did not play the jackpot as an experimental group. Qualitative data can enhance quasi-experimental research by revealing participants’ experiences and opinions, but quantitative data is the method’s foundation. And the physicians compare the outcomes of this treatment to the results of standard treatments to see if this treatment is more effective.

Regression Discontinuity

But without true random assignment of the students to conditions, there remains the possibility of other important confounding variables that the researcher was not able to control. In an experiment with random assignment, study units have the same chance of being assigned to a given treatment condition. As such, random assignment ensures that both the experimental and control groups are equivalent. In a quasi-experimental design, assignment to a given treatment condition is based on something other than random assignment. We then performed a systematic review of four years of publications from two informatics journals.

In situations where it is known that only a small sample size will be available to test the efficacy of an intervention, randomization may not be a viable option. Randomization is beneficial because on average it tends to evenly distribute both known and unknown confounding variables between the intervention and control group. However, when the sample size is small, randomization may not adequately accomplish this balance. Thus, alternative design and analytical methods are often used in place of randomization when only small sample sizes are available. Quasi-experiments and true experiments differ primarily in their ability to randomly assign participants to groups. While true experiments provide a higher level of control, quasi-experiments offer practical and ethical alternatives in situations where randomization is not feasible or desirable.

We do not include pre-post designs without a control group in this review, as in general, QEDs are primarily those designs that identify a comparison group or time period that is as similar as possible to the treatment group or time period in terms of baseline (pre-intervention) characteristics (50). Below, we describe features of each QED, considering strengths and limitations and providing examples of their use. Following this summary, we discuss opportunities to strengthen their internal validity, illustrated with examples from the literature. Then we propose a decision framework for key decision points that lead to different QED options.

Understanding these differences is crucial for researchers when selecting the most appropriate research method for their study. As well, when a complex intervention is related to a policy or guideline shift and implementation requires logistical adjustments (such as phased roll-outs to embed the intervention or to train staff), QEDs more truly mimic real world constraints. As a result, capturing processes of implementation are critical as they can describe important variation in uptake, informing interpretation of the findings for external validity. However, QEDs are often conducted by teams with strong interests in adapting the intervention or ‘learning by doing’, which can limit interpretation of findings if not planned into the design.

This type of research is often performed in cases where a control group cannot be created or random selection cannot be performed. Researchers can then examine the long-term effects of these two groups of kids to determine the effect of attending certain schools. This information can be applied to increase the chances of students being enrolled in these high schools. A set of measurements taken at intervals over a period of time that are interrupted by a treatment. The tendency for many medical and psychological problems to improve over time without any form of treatment.

One Story Home Design & Floor Plans

single story house plans

Especially in housingdevelopments, homes use the same style or only incorporate slight variations. A one-story house is commonly referred to as a single-level or ranch home. These homes typically have a single level, with no stairs or decks within the living space, and are often built on small lots due to their modest footprints. This open-concept plan from architect John Tee, makes the most of its natural light-filled square footage and expansive rear covered porch.

House Features

Whether youlive in Florida or Oregon, a porte-cochere is an excellent feature. Another situation that could be right for an elevated foundation is if you live on a small lot, where parking canbecome an issue. Depending on the height of theelevated foundation, you might be able to store a trailer and van underneath your home as well.

Knowing what the ship has to offer, especially how new or old it is always plays a major role in how I book a cruise. This is why I created this post to break down Princess Cruises ships by age, class, and how many guests they can accommodate. She has the best features of the enhanced Royal Class, meaning great places to unwind and a wealth of fantastic dining options, including more venues than on any other class of ship in the Princess fleet. She is the last of the Royal-class ships which started back in 2013 with Royal Princess, and is a true gem of the fleet.

Sea Breeze Rollglider® and The Net Ropes Course

Unveiled way back in 1998, it's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet. They're not the least expensive vessels out there, but they're not pricey by any means. It's possible to find Princess voyages to the Caribbean, Bahamas or Mexico starting under $100 per person, per night, including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason. Every Princess ship also has a casino, often just off the Piazza, and spas are big on Princess ships. There's no shortage of theater and lounge entertainment on Princess ships.

Cabana Stateroom

The ship sails to various destinations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, the California coast, and the South Pacific. Like other Princess ships, it’s also equipped with the signature MedallionClass technology. This tech offers cruisers touchless experiences, such as contactless payments, and even food and beverage delivery anywhere on the ship. Within the Grand Class, vessels like Emerald Princess, Crown Princess, Caribbean Princess, and Ruby Princess are a blend of classic and contemporary. These ships are renowned for their grandeur and capacity to provide a wide array of onboard activities and dining options, making them a timeless choice for many travelers.

The smallest Princess cruise ship is the Grand Princess, which is part of the Grand-class ships in the Princess fleet. She was the largest and was the largest and most expensive passenger ship ever built when she began service in 1998. Because of their size, Coral-class ships don’t have all the amenities of some newer builds, but passengers often prefer their intimate size. Dining revolves around a main dining room, buffet, and bar and grill.

What are the Island Princess and Coral Princess known for?

Princess is particularly known for cruises to Alaska, where it dominates the market for cruises along with sister line Holland America. In a typical year, Princess deploys seven or eight ships to Alaska in the summer — far more than most other lines. It also operates its own wilderness lodges in the state, as well as tourist trains and buses.

Introduction to Princess Cruises

Princess’ oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. Coral Princess and Island Princess launched in January and July of 2003, respectively. The two 16-deck ships of the Coral Class are the smallest in the Princess Cruises fleet. This allows them to access ports not available to their larger sister ships.

Princess Cruises began with a single cruise ship sailing cruises to Mexico. The smallest Princess Cruises ship in terms of gross tonnage is the “Coral Princess,” which has a gross tonnage of 91,627. It can accommodate 2,000 guests, has a length of 294 meters, and features 16 decks. The ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. Listed below is every cruise ship with Princess Cruises in order from newest to oldest.

How many ship classes does Princess Cruises have?

Prepare to receive the royal treatment (pun intended) aboard the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess. Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy. As noted above, it’s the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we’ll see).

What this means is there aren't a lot of ways to live large on a Princess ship or to pack a lot of people into a single accommodation. Until the debut of Sky Princess in 2019, the line didn't have a single cabin that could accommodate more than four people. When it comes to rooms, Princess is sort of the Marriott of the big-ship cruise world. Princess appeals to an older demographic than lines such as Carnival and Norwegian.

Sun Princess will be the largest ship built for Princess Cruises and the company’s first ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Did you find our complete guide to Princess cruise ships by age helpful? Drop us an anchor below to share what you love about Princess Cruises. Because of their breadth, Grand-class ships each offer slight differences but encompass plenty of things to do while remaining comfortable and understated mid-size ships. You’ll find Vines Wine Bar just off the Piazza, a circular three-deck-high atrium that serves as a defining characteristic of most Princess ships. Here is where you’ll toast during the captain’s welcome or grab an afternoon latte at the International Café.

There are an epic 29 restaurants and bars available to enjoy, while there will be entertainment at every hour of the day in the Princess Live! The Piazza is a stunning central hub, and The Dome transforms from an enclosed pool space during the day to a vibrant entertainment venue at night. Whether you’re drawn to the modern amenities of the newer vessels or the classic charm of the older ones, each Princess ship promises a memorable experience.

That said, Princess strongly recommends that all travelers bring a passport. Princess also deploys as many as eight ships to Europe in the summer, and it has a big presence in Australia, where it can deploy as many as six ships for parts of each year. In recent years, it has also become a major player in cruises around Japan that cater to both American and Japanese travelers, as well as Australians.

For dining, the Signature Collection introduces the Signature Restaurant, a premium dining venue offering gourmet dishes crafted by renowned chefs, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. When it comes to entertainment, the Park19 offers a range of activities, including the Sea Breeze, the first-ever roll-glider at sea. Additionally, the ship is powered by liquefied natural gas, which is a cleaner fuel alternative. We’re happy to see that the cruise line is taking steps towards a greener future. Not to be confused with a class of ships, Princess offers MedallionClass cruise vacations through its wearable technology called an Ocean Medallion.

It’s worth noting that, unlike some other cruise lines, Princess Cruises doesn’t drastically change its onboard offerings based on the ship’s age. The newer Princess Cruises ships, especially those from the Sphere-class, are generally larger in terms of physical dimensions. This increased size allows for more expansive public areas, larger entertainment venues, and more spacious deck areas. In contrast, the older ships in the fleet, while smaller, often provide a more intimate setting, with cozier lounges and public spaces.

The BackstoryThe Cruise Against Cancer started in New York nearly a decade ago. Our Brother, Steve Russell decided to find a way to help fight Cancer. Our Mother was taken from us by Cancer in 2001 and he wanted to raise funds in her honor. Steve’s Son Colin worked on the Lauren Kristy, a 65 foot turn-of-the-century style riverboat. So, during a family get together in 2017, we were reminiscing and decided that they may have the Ocean, But we have a river! Later that evening the Minnesota Cruise Against Cancer 2018 had begun.

They’ve been meeting with the excursion tour coordinators who help get folks to Duluth and on the ship. While you’re here with us, enjoy everything Duluth has to offer. Some of our favorite attractions offer organized tours, activities and classes. It’s a great way to learn something new and love Duluth like we do. Our most in-depth narrated tour puts you right into the region’s most spectacular scenery.

Tentatively, cruise ships will dock at the DECC in the downtown area. Combine the pink-sand beaches of Bermuda with a trip to the Bahamas onboard Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas for a longer, sun-soaked getaway. The cruise sails from Baltimore and overnights in Port Canaveral, for even more time exploring.

Then, it continues to Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas for private cabanas, gigantic water slides, and swim-up bars. Onboard Grandeur, passengers can watch movies under the stars, watch a tango show, take culinary or sushi classes, and learn some new dance moves. Sample excellent cuisine at one of Royal Caribbean’s signature restaurants, like Chops Grille steakhouse or Giovanni’s Table. Duluth is flat near the lake shore, but just beyond the downtown areas, the terrain slopes up.

The cruise calls on the private island Princess Cays and includes kayaking, eco tours, and more. This is the first of seven Viking cruises that will be stopping in Duluth through September. Four of these stops will be part of a new option for passengers that can either start or end their cruise here in Duluth. American Queen Voyages will also be making two stops in Duluth this summer.

Duluth consists of several compact districts including Bayfront, Canal Park, the Historic Arts and Theater (HART) District, Lincoln Park Craft District and downtown. The areas are easily walkable, and just beyond these commercial districts, Park Point boasts one of the world's longest freshwater sand spits, spanning 6 miles. This popular destination includes a local beach with a seasonal lifeguard and a recreation area. Duluth's 130 city parks provide ample opportunity for enjoyment of the outdoors.

Later that evening the Minnesota Cruise Against Cancer had begun. Cruise Against Cancer is a non-profit dedicated to raising funds for the Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society, with all the funds staying right here locally. Many of our friends and family members, all too often, learn about yet another loved one being diagnosed with some form of cancer. Therefore, it is imperative that we continue doing our part to raise funds for research and to assist with the expenses related to those affected during their treatments. THE MAJESTC STARfrom Stillwater River BoatsThe perfect luxury yacht for a memorable experience! The Majestic Star has 4 levels, including a comfortable lounge, dining level, 3rd level dance & entertainment deck and a top sun deck.

With plenty of space, climate controlled enclosed levels, breathtaking views, and beautifully designed social areas, it’s the perfect place for our cruise. The Majestic Star has 4 levels, including a comfortable lounge, dining level, 3rd level dance/entertainment deck and a top sun deck. BUT…we couldn’t always make it to NY for the cruise and we knew many people here in MN who had lost loved ones, were current caregivers or in their own battle against cancer, or were cancer survivors. So, during a family get together in 2017, we were reminiscing and decided that they may have the Ocean but we have a river.

Buses and Shuttles from the Miami Airport to the Port of Miami

While still very much urban, Brickell offers a more suburban feel. Plenty of hotels are found in the neighborhood, which also offers fantastic dining and shopping at Mary Brickell Village. You can give any additional gratuity to the driver directly as the standard rate of tipping is now 20%. A ship delay for non-release is common and a ship not arriving into port happens more often than people think. In these circumstances all pickups going to the port will be delayed.

LOS ANGELES TRANSFERS

Miami has an extensive public transit system, which connects you to all major attractions in the city. Metrobus, Metrorail, and free trolley buses make it easy to explore Miami without a car. Miami Beach and Downtown are easily explored on foot, although having a car or traveling by taxi and public transit are the best way to get between districts. Similarly, there are rental car companies that provide courtesy shuttles after you drop off your vehicle. At some properties you can even leave your car parked at the hotel to avoid costly port parking.

From cruise shuttle services, third-party transfers, to the good ol’ rental car, we’ve tried them all. And let’s not forget about those handy free cruise shuttle buses that many hotels offer. Private shuttles are a viable option for small groups, working out around $30 a head, this competes with the official cruise lines’ shuttle services. But with so many transportation options available, it’s good to have in mind what each one offers, so that you can plan accordingly.

Private Transfer

The city offers a lot of options depending on your needs. Try a hotel in South Beach, about 10 minutes from the port. Try the downtown or Brickell areas which are nearby but also have a lot to do.

Using GPS to Arrive at Port of Miami

As an alternative to the official cruise line shuttles, there are independent shuttles that offer pre-booked transportation between Miami Airport and the cruise port. Cruise line transfers can be a pricey option, particularly if you are traveling as a family or group. Unlike a taxi or ride share, cruise shuttle transfers are priced per person, not per vehicle. Once on the trolley, you’ll simply ride it over the causeway to Dodge Island where the cruise ships are located.
